Visual Literacy Bootcamp
Sean Thompson
"When technology shifts, it bends the culture." Visual communication is a fundamental part of the digital-age. Teachers need to create more effective pieces of visual communication from posters and charts to infographics and enable their students to do likewise. Web designers and bloggers neglect developing these skills at their own peril. This session aims to raise awareness of basic design principles to this end. |
Discovery Session
In this short session we will begin developing basic visual literacy skills for better communication. In the digital-age we consume an increasing amount of our information through screens enhanced through the use of images. Teachers need to develop these skills in order to support their students. By focusing on some simple rules of presentation we are able to achieve the creation of more appealing pieces of visual communication that reach audiences, often at an unconscious level. We will consider presentation theory and the work of Brian Kennedy, Kirby Ferguson, even Pablo Picasso! A variety of examples will be given for illustration and participants will be given an image based challenge to help hone skills with the digital tools necessary for creation of posters, charts and infographics. |
How much time do you spend searching for information online? How fast do you decide whether a site you land upon is worth staying on (this basically defines bounce rate)? Better design means better retention of viewers and of content by consumers. |
